Reps. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) and Marjorie Taylor Green (R-Ga.) will regain their committee assignments after losing them in the Democratic-controlled Congress of 2021. According to two sources with knowledge of the selections, the House GOP Steering Committee chose Greene on Tuesday to serve on the House Homeland Security and Oversight Committees and Gosar to serve on the House Natural Resources and Oversight Committees, where he previously served before being removed from the panel.
The entire House GOP conference will need to ratify the decisions made by the Steering Committee, which consists of about 30 elected regional representatives and members of the House Leadership. The Steering Committee’s suggestions are often accepted by the conference.
The U.S.-Mexico border will likely receive a lot of attention from the House Homeland Security Committee, which will have two staff members working from the border and is led by Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.). In response to Mayorkas’ handling of the border, Greene has called for his impeachment as secretary of homeland security.

The Homeland Security committee, according to Greene, “will investigate the Biden administration’s transgressions of our laws and fund (and defund) programs to defend our border and American sovereignty,” according to a statement she made about her appointment.
Also on the agenda for the House Oversight Committee are investigations into border difficulties, the financial dealings of President Biden’s son Hunter Biden, and the origins of COVID-19. That panel will be led by its chair, James Comer (R-Ky.).

And it’s not only the Biden Crime Family; the GOP majority will look into all instances in which the American people are being mistreated by the government. Now, rather than being subject to Democrat rule’s rubber-stamp, every three- and four-letter agency must account to Republican supervision.
In February 2021, just one month after she was inducted into office, the House decided to have Greene removed from her committee assignments due to her prior support for conspiracy theories and social media posts that incited violence against Democratic leaders. Greene expressed regret for accepting false conspiracies on the House floor that day.
Seven of the eleven House Republicans who supported removing Greene from her positions on the budget and education committees are still in office: Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (Florida), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Carlos Giménez (Fla.), Young Kim (Calif.), Nicole Malliotakis (N.Y.), Maria Elvira Salazar (Fla.), and Chris Smith (N.J.).
The House decided in November 2021 to condemn Gosar and remove him from his committee duties after he shared an anime movie on Twitter that showed him throwing swords at Vice President Biden and killing Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). On the House floor, Gosar declared that he does not “espouse violence towards anyone” and that he removed the video on his own volition “out of compassion for individuals who legitimately felt offense.”
Reps. David Joyce (R-Ohio) and Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) were the only other Republicans to vote in favor of stripping Gosar of his committee assignments, while Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) abstained.
In November 2021, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) promised that Greene and Gosar would be reinstated to committees, possibly even “better” ones, if the GOP regained control of the House.
Furthermore, McCarthy has stated that Republicans will prevent Reps. Adam Schiff (Calif.), Eric Swalwell (Calif.), and Ilhan Omar (Minn.) from serving on the House Intelligence Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, respectively, in retaliation for Democrats removing Greene and Gosar from committees and then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) blocking two of his picks from the Jan. 6 select committee.
In contrast to many of her fellow hard-right House colleagues, Greene was among the most outspoken supporters of McCarthy for Speaker. But she insisted again and time again that she had not been guaranteed a committee assignment. Greene had showed interest in serving on the House Judiciary Committee in a 2022 interview, but he was not chosen for the position.
