Texas is sending hundreds more National Guard soldiers to the Mexican border to assist in containing a record-breaking flood of illegal immigrants. The soldiers will join those already stationed in El Paso, which has emerged as the center of the escalating border problem.

This Thursday, the Texas National Guard announced that it would be sending 200 soldiers and 40 Humvees to the mission Greg Abbott had requested using a C-130J cargo plane. To stop people from entering the country illegally, more than 400 soldiers have already been deployed.

“You cannot simply cross anywhere you choose. According to Maj. Gen. Win Burkett, director of operations for Operation Lone Star, the state mission to stop unauthorized border crossings, “we’re focusing on deterrence, on proving that we can be where we need to be anyplace on this border.”

Gen. Burkett, who is in charge of the 36th Infantry Division of the Texas National Guard, asserted that “we can surge in a very short amount of time.”

The most recent troop and Humvee deployment will aid local law enforcement in expanding operations. According to state officials, the National Guard also used concertina wire and armored vehicles to deter illegal immigration and secure the border.

According to Texas Guard authorities, “all sectors along the border are stepping up their response posture to protect Texas from the flow of immigrants and cartel activity streaming into our state.”
