GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis stated that politicians like Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) “had to stop propagating lies” in an interview with NBC on Monday. These are lies that they are disseminating, and they not only contribute to the lack of adequate gun safety in this nation but also harm, kill, and murder our people. When you put everything together, you get what occurred on Saturday night. Additionally, it was noted that “whether or not the cause of the incident on Saturday night turns out to be hatred,” “it’s still a culture and atmosphere that we live in, and that politicians are driving.”

According to Ellis, the rise in anti-LGBTQ hate crimes is mostly caused by two factors: One is the rhetoric that politicians are using. They propagate misinformation and animosity toward our community while exploiting it as political footballs. Over 300 anti-LGBTQ bills have been presented just in the last year alone; 300 against a group that has nothing to offer. I believe that’s all, then. Add to it social media sites that profit from spreading false information and hate. Even though they have the means to stop it, they continue to profit from the spread of hatred. So, when you understand what’s behind something, it’s really frustrating to witness something like Saturday night. Regardless of the motivation, we are aware that the speech and culture of hate in our community are growing and causing actual harm.

“And even a report that we’re about to release shows that there have either been 100 violent attacks or threats of violence against drag events across this country, in this country, in the last year,” she continued. We’re talking about brunches, people, that’s what. DeSantis and Boebert, in my opinion, have blood on their hands in this. They must quit propagating untruths. These are lies that they are disseminating, and they not only contribute to the lack of adequate gun safety in this nation but also harm, kill, and murder our people. Put all of those together, and you get what took place on Saturday night. You know, on Saturday night, a brick was hurled through a homosexual nightclub in Hell’s Kitchen in this city alone, New York City. That pub has experienced this incident four times in the past week. You can see that regardless of whether the cause of the incident on Saturday night turns out to be hatred, which is what it all seems to be pointing at, it’s still a climate and a culture that we live in, and one that politicians are guiding. They are encouraging this hatred.
