On Thursday, California Representative Adam Schiff became the second Democrat to formally enter what is shaping up to be a crowded fight to replace Senator Dianne Feinstein in 2024. Feinstein has not yet announced whether or not she would seek reelection.

“We’re fighting for the survival of our nation. MAGA zealots, who are only interested in themselves and staying in power, are a threat to our democratic system. And despite the fact that millions of Americans are putting in more effort than ever before just to make ends meet, our economy is not working for them “added Schiff in a statement. I’m running for U.S. Senate to represent California because “we need a fighter for our democracy and our families” right now.

Former House Intelligence Committee head and leader of the first impeachment effort against President Trump, Rep. Schiff, has joined Democratic Rep. Katie Porter in entering the contest. Representative Barbara Lee has informed her party colleagues that she plans to seek for reelection.

Feinstein, who is 89 years old, has retained her Senate post since 1992 without saying when she expects to leave. Everyone is invited to throw their hat in the ring, and I will make an announcement concerning my plans for 2024 at the proper moment,” she stated in a statement earlier this month.

On Thursday, Schiff revealed to a Los Angeles television station that he had notified Feinstein of his intentions to run for office prior to making his declaration “feeling completely at ease with my proclamation. I can’t accomplish it without God’s blessing.”

The top two vote-getters in the primary election, regardless of party affiliation, move on to the general election in California, which is part of the state’s so-called “jungle primary” system.

Earlier this week, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy vetoed Schiff’s request for a position on the Intelligence Committee under the new Republican majority in Congress. Schiff, who has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics for a long time, claimed that McCarthy was punishing him for his involvement in Trump’s impeachment by denying him the seat: “I believe he is being refused the seat because he spearheaded the impeachment of his master at Mar-a-Lago.”
