Dems Want Urgent Action On Immigration Reform; “Stakes Are Too Great For Inactivity At This Point”

Members of the New Democrat Coalition (NDC) have called on members of Congress to take “urgent action” regarding immigration reform in order to enact legislation that will protect Dreamers before the end of the lame duck session at the end of this month.

Together with the heads of the immigration task force in California and Arizona, National Democratic Committee Chair Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) and Greg Stanton (Ariz.) issued a statement on Wednesday calling for the creation of a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers before the end of the year.

The legislators wrote, “The stakes are too great for inactivity at this point.” “As their future hangs in the balance, we are dedicated to working with our colleagues in the House and Senate to achieve bipartisan legislation before the end of the year that provides Dreamers with the stability and security they have been waiting for and that they deserve.”

According to recent reports, negotiations are underway in the Senate to reach a compromise that will safeguard “dreamers,” often known as immigrants who were brought to the United States when they were minors.

According to reports, Senators Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Arizona) have reached an agreement to provide a pathway to citizenship for two million Dreamers along with other related provisions to appeal to the base of the Republican Party, including increased border security. The agreement also reportedly provides for other related provisions.

Since an appeals court declared in October that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was unlawful, supporters for immigration reform have had renewed hope that Dreamers will have access to a pathway to citizenship.

In 2012, then-President Barack Obama established the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in order to shield “Dreamers” from being deported. Dreamers are only permitted to be eligible for the program for a total of two years at a time, but they are able to renew their status.

Despite the fact that an appeals court found the program to be unlawful and the Biden administration is no longer able to accept new participants, existing program participants are still able to renew their safeguards.
